The centres will mean that patients will be able to access appropriate diagnostic testing and consultation within a three week timeframe. Should a cancer diagnosis be made, patients will then be referred to the most appropriate specialist pathway. Should investigations reveal other medical causes for symptoms, patients will be referred on to the most appropriate specialist pathway or discharged back to their GP.
The pilot will run for a 12-month period from the end of June 2021, with ongoing evaluation throughout to ensure best practice and long-term feasibility.
