Arclight ophthalmoscope in use, Malawi 2017
We train medical students from the universities of Dundee and St Andrews, orthoptists and optometrists from Glasgow Caledonian University, specialists eye nurses from all over Scotland, ophthalmology trainees from NHS Lothian, Tayside and Fife as well as hosting an International Clinical Fellow from overseas.
The NHS Fife team has also been involved in several Vision 2020 teaching initiatives in lower resource countries such as Malawi and Indonesia with Dr Caroline Styles leading the Malawi Diabetic Retinopathy screening training.
NHS Fife collaborates with the University of St Andrews in the development and evaluation of low cost diagnostic and training tools as part of The Arclight Project led by Dr Andrew Blaikie. Professor Sanders is a founding member of the University of Edinburgh Ophthalmology Masters which trains many eye care health workers from overseas.
In 2021 we will start building our International Eye Training Hub serving the UK as well as partners overseas. This hub will offer both face to face as well as remote online teaching using multi-media tool as well as simulated examination and surgical skills models.
