When the ability to carry out our normal activities of daily living (occupation) is affected by illness, it can also affect physical, psychological and emotional well-being.
Occupational therapy interventions are symptom-led and a problem solving approach is used to help with everyday activities that people may be finding difficult (such as difficulty washing & dressing, cooking, getting around their home, as well as activities for enjoyment). We use a holistic, person centred approach is to set goals, optimise functional ability, improve quality of life and provide a sense of control. This may involve adapting the way we manage tasks and/or using equipment to make activities less effortful.
Referral routes
If there is already an Occupational therapist (OT) involved in a person’s care, they may be able to meet any needs, as all OTs from the Fife Health and Social Care Partnership have a role within Palliative Care. Support from a community OT can be accessed through Fife Council on 03451551503. The Community Palliative OT service is part of the Specialist Palliative Care service covering the whole of Fife and referral can be made by any healthcare professional (such as GP, district nurse, hospital team) via the Fife Specialist Palliative Care Single Point of Access (SPOA).
Working hours
The OT service is available Monday to Friday.
What we do
Although we do not prescribe medication we can advise on techniques to help manage symptoms such as pain, breathlessness, fatigue and anxiety. We can also help plan to adapt your home environment and ensure the right support and equipment is in place to increase independence or ensure safety as you come home from hospital/hospice, or as your condition changes. As end of life approaches our we get involved to help you to make informed decisions about your preferred place of care.

How can I get a stairlift /wet floor shower?
A community occupational therapist from Fife Council will need to carry out an assessment to ensure this is the most appropriate adaptation for you. This would take into consideration your medical history and functional ability.
