Primary care pharmacists play a significant part in managing medicines. Their role is to focus on maximising the benefits and minimising risks associated with medicines. They also work to make the best use of resources which are allocated for medicines.
Primary care pharmacists work in the local community and support GPs, nurses, community pharmacies and other healthcare professionals. They may also see patients at specialist clinics working within the areas of:
- Adult Mental Health
- Old Age Psychiatry
- Learning Disabilities
- Community Mental Health
- Polypharmacy
- Renal
- Respiratory
Patients may be referred to Primary Care Pharmacy teams for information or advice on their medicines, for a self-administration assessment, or medicine review.
Pharmacy teams work in every GP practice in Fife. GP practices have someone from the pharmacy team working there on most days, with larger practices having someone there every day.
