There is a legal requirement to obtain patient consent before a patient can progress to surgery.

This process begins at your first consultation with the clinical team. After we have assessed your condition, we will explain the treatment options available including informing you of all risks associated with the treatment. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and we will share appropriate information about the condition and its treatment. You will have the opportunity to consider the options and discuss with friends and family if you wish prior to consent.

Before surgery, a consent form must be signed by the operating surgeon and you, the patient. This consent form confirms that you understand your diagnosis, your treatment options and the benefits and risks of the treatment offered and confirms that you wish to proceed on this basis. The risks of the procedure are recorded on the consent form.

At any point in the process, you may choose not to proceed with the surgery.

For patients who are unable to give consent either through age, mental incapacity or medical conditions, a different consent process is required. Please contact pre-assessment at the Victoria Hospital on the number below.
