Living with a rheumatic condition can have a big effect on the person diagnosed and those around them. The feelings people have about a diagnosis can vary and there is no right or wrong way to feel. Sometimes, strong feelings make it harder to cope and can feel overwhelming.
There are many things that can be done to protect one’s mental health like getting plenty rest, light exercise and eating well. It is also helpful to nurture good relationships with loved ones, for they can form a stable network of trust and support. Also, where appropriate, we can offer support to patients who feel they need further guidance in adjusting to their condition. There are also a number of helpful voluntary groups that are available to offer further support of this kind.
If someone attending our service is feeling low or anxious often and this is affecting other areas of their life then we recommend contacting the GP.
