Infectious diseases

A notifiable disease is an infectious disease that has to be reported to the government authorities as required by law. In the United Kingdom, notification of infectious diseases is a statutory duty for registered medical practitioners and laboratories, under the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 and the Health Protection (Notification) Regulations 2010.

The Public Health Protection team in NHS Fife has a key role in monitoring and responding to the incidence of notifiable diseases e.g. meningitis. Health Protection Scotland (HPS) collects information about the incidence of notifiable illness and collates this in monthly reports available on their website.
