What you’ll do

As a nurse in NHS Fife, the scope of your role will differ depending on which area you chose to work in, but the focus will remain the same; to deliver excellent quality, safe, effective, person centred care.

Where you'll work

This will depend on which team you join. NHS Fife is split into the Acute Services Division and the Health and Social Care Partnership. Within Acute, we incorporate all emergency medical and surgical admissions at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. Acute Services are diverse, caring for both adults and children within the Emergency Department within designated in-patient wards.

The Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline incorporates day surgery and endoscopy as well as specialist cancer services and outpatient clinics, and rehabilitation in-patient wards.

Skills and traits

We require registered Adult nurses and would particularly welcome nurses with experience in critical care, emergency and acute admissions, and general medical and surgical specialities.  We have roles for nurses in other specialist areas and welcome interest for those able to demonstrate experience in all areas of adult nursing.

Work environment - our teams

We have a host of teams across different directorates, hospitals and community settings.

Medical Directorate, Acute Services Division
In patient specialties: Acute Medical Assessment, Emergency Department, Renal Medicine, Respiratory, Haematology, Cardiology, Critical Care, Gastrointestinal, Stroke Medicine, General Medicine and Medicine for Elderly Patients.

Out patient specialties: General Out Patients, Diabetic services, Haematology and Oncology as well as Dermatology.

Surgical Directorate, Acute Services Division

Our Planned Care wards provide specific care to patients requiring emergency and elective surgery. We provide care to various specialities including urology, general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, ENT, theatres, anaesthetics and recovery, as well as endoscopy.

Community, Health and Social Care Partnership
Community hospitals are an evolving care environment which offers multiple opportunities to enhance your nursing career. Community hospitals deliver a range of rehabilitation and specialist care, including end of life care. Our Community Hospitals, Health and Social Care Partnership are

If you are interested in following the advanced nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist pathway within NHS Fife, there many opportunities for career development supported by funding to access Post Graduate level studies.
For all nursing staff, guidance will be available and nurtured through personal development planning (PDP).
Community nursing is currently undergoing national transformational change with an emphasis of care being delivered at home or as near to home as possible which in turn is unlocking career developments, opportunities and pathways in this area of nursing.

The role

The Mental Health team supports patients in inpatient and outpatient departments as well as day patients and those in community care settings.

Inpatient care is provided in Queen Margaret Hospital in West Fife, Whyteman’s Brae Hospital in Central Fife and Stratheden Hospital in North East Fife providing acute, rehabilitation and transitional care as well as intensive care and low secure as well as Day Hospital care for adults and older people.
Our service also provides specialist outpatient and community care and treatment for children and adolescents with mental health problems, and addiction services for those with drug and/or alcohol problems.

What you’ll do

As a mental health nurse, you will join a service that is committed to multi-disciplinary team working with strong links to both inpatient and community services.

As a Mental Health nurse in NHS Fife, you will be instrumental in providing general mental health services for adults and elderly people across the whole of Fife. You will be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care.
Within the mental health service, we strive to deliver excellent quality care which is safe, effective and person centred, promoting a recovery and strength-based approach respecting individuals and families as partners in care.

Skills and traits

We’re looking for Band 5 registered nurses with experience in a mental health setting gained either in a hospital or community setting.

Where you’ll work

Inpatient care is provided in Queen Margaret Hospital in West Fife, Whyteman’s Brae Hospital in Central Fife and Stratheden Hospital in North East Fife providing acute, rehabilitation and transitional care as well as intensive care and low secure as well as Day Hospital care for adults and older people.

Working environment – our teams

We have a range of Fife Wide community-based services including severe and enduring mental health outreach teams such as
Rehabilitation Team, Community Mental Health Teams, Unscheduled Care Team, Care Home and Hospital Liaison Services and Mental Health Nurses attached to GP practices as well as Fife wide CAMHS and Addiction Services and forensic teams. We also have other services such as Alcohol Related Brain Damage Team, Huntington’s service, Adult ADHD, Eating Disorders, Homeless Liaison, Perinatal Mental Health, and Intensive assessments teams for older people such as the CAST team in Central and West Fife and the EAST team in North East Fife.

The role

NHS Fife Learning Disability Nursing Service strives to support people who have a learning disability by promoting their physical and mental health and sense of wellbeing. We also advocate on their behalf for inclusion into mainstream services and promote positive behaviour support whilst striving to reduce health inequalities experienced by people with a learning disability.

What you’ll do

As a learning disability nurse within NHS Fife, you will support those who have a wide range of needs and across a variety of settings including community-based services, specialist in-patient services (assessment and treatment, local and regional forensic units) in addition to specialist roles.
Transition Nurse - The Transition Nurse has a key role in liaising with other health disciplines and agencies to assist with pro-active and co-ordinated care plans in the period between childhood and adulthood.
Epilepsy Specialist Nurse - The Epilepsy Specialist Nurse works within a multidisciplinary approach to epilepsy care management in any individual person with learning disabilities and epilepsy. The service care management approach is underpinned by evidence-based practice.
Epilepsy Specialist Nurse - The Epilepsy Specialist Nurse supports the person with a learning disability when they are accessing acute physical care either as an in-patient or an out-patient and provides advice and support to acute and primary care services. The liaison nurse also has a role in developing and delivering training relating to the needs of people with a learning disability.
Children & Young People’s Learning Disability Nurse - The Children & Young People’s Learning Disability Nurse works within a multi-disciplinary service for children and young people with a learning disability which is distinct from the adult service. The team works with children and young people (0-16 years or until school leaving) who have a global developmental delay or learning disability (with or without autism) and mental health or behavioural problems.

Where you'll work

This will be dependent on which speciality you join. Our inpatient wards (Mayfield, Levendale, Daleview & Tayview) are on site at Lynebank Hospital in Dunfermline.

Skills and traits

We require specialist, experienced registered nurses who can provide bespoke support that is dependent upon the needs of the individuals. Learning disability nurses have a particularly pivotal role in ensuring the high standard of safe, effective, and person-centred care is maintained.

Work environment - our teams

As well as community-based services, specialist in-patient services in Lynebank and Stratheden Hospitals, we also have a specialist Fife Forensic Learning Disability Team (FFLDS) supports individuals with learning disabilities and a history of offending and/or risk of offending that may result in significant harm to themselves or others.
Health based respite care is provided by learning disability nurses for people with profound learning disabilities based at Rowan Walk which is part of the Broad Street Respite Unit at Cowdenbeath.

The role

As part of the children’s service multidisciplinary team, you will have responsibility for the assessment of care needs as well as the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. You will ensure that a high standard of holistic care to children and their families is delivered consistently, working closely with team members to achieve positive care outcomes.

What you’ll do

You’ll be expected to work in accordance with all directives and guidance from the NMC and take responsibility for assessing the care needs of patients to ensure high level of quality of care. You will work with your Charge Nurse and other colleagues to always ensure the highest standards of care. You will also be responsible for maintaining patient records within agreed standards and ensuring the quality of record keeping within your area of responsibility.

Skills and traits

You will be expected to be an advocate for the children and their families, so we are looking for people with excellent communications skills. You must also be willing and able to implement agreed local and national clinical policies and guidelines. You will be encouraged to participate in the clinical audit and Scottish Patient Safety and research programmes within the ward area to ensure continuous development of evidence-based practise. As a Registered Nurse (Child Branch) you are expected to have a working knowledge of all equipment used in the area such as hoists, Gemini pumps, syringe drivers, blood glucose monitors. BP machines, cardiac monitors, resuscitation equipment and infusion lines. Training will be available to those who feel that they would benefit from refresher training.

Where you’ll work

As a children’s nurse in NHS Fife, you will be part of the Women & Children’s Health Directorate so where you will work will depend on which area of the Children’s services you work in. The directorate encompasses many different fields providing maternity, gynaecology, acute paediatrics, and genitourinary medicine services to Fife’s young people.

Children’s services are provided across three main sites in Fife: Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline and St Andrews Memorial Hospital, St Andrews. Clinics for all specialities are held in community settings across Fife.
