Revalidation and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
The NMC maintains the register of nurses and midwives who meet the requirements for registration in the UK, and nursing associates who meet the requirements for registration in England.
They also set the requirements of the professional education that supports people to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for entry to, or annotation on, our register.
The councils is also responsible for shaping the practice of the professionals on the NMC register by developing and promoting standards including our Code, and we promote lifelong learning through revalidation.
Where serious concerns are raised about a nurse, midwife or nursing associate’s fitness to practise, The NMC can investigate and, if needed, take action.
Revalidation
The revalidation process requires all registered nurses and midwives (registrants) to evidence their professional development and ongoing fitness to practise; complying with the NMC revalidation requirements and the Code (2015). Revalidation is a three yearly cycle and not a one-off event.
- All registrants have an individual responsibility to ensure they are prepared for revalidation. This includes registering for NMC Online to confirm their 'Renewal Expiry' or Revalidation date.

- NHS Fife are responsible for ensuring that registrants within the organisation are aware of the NMC revalidation requirements and have access to support and information to help collate and document the evidence required by the NMC.
- By working nurses and midwives the Council is aiming to make the reregistration process smooth and without risk to the registrant or the organisation, to provide assurance to the public that the registered nurses and midwives within NHS Fife are safe and fit to deliver high quality care.
