If you are not currently working with NHS Fife then registering for the bank is a simple one-off process. You can use the form below to express your interest in joining our nursing bank. If successful, you will be in the position to:
- choose when, where, and how often you work
- plan shifts up to five weeks in advance
- pick up additional shifts, even at very short notice
- get cash into your bank account quickly (bank staff are paid weekly).

Nursing, Mental Health and Midwifery
If you’re looking for work to fit around your clinical/medical studies or are a retired nurse or midwife looking to work additional hours in your spare time, working flexibly through NHS Fife’s nurse bank could be the perfect solution for you.
Flexible working
Nurse bank offers short-term, flexible shifts, days, nights, weekends, and twilight shifts are routinely available, with shifts ranging from 12.5 hours to shorter 6-hour shifts. Our shift patterns may fit around any existing commitments. Such working patterns can allow bank workers to work flexibly around childcare, studying, employment or caring responsibilities.
How to join
The process for recruiting both registered and non-registered nurses and midwives to NHS Fife Nursing and Midwifery Staff Bank follows the same robust recruitment and selection processes as required for permanent posts. This process is slightly different depending on whether you are an internal or external applicant – some of our bank staff also already work for us, but pick up additional shifts through ‘the bank’.
Internal applicants
You can join via the internal process if you wish to do the same role as you currently have. If you are looking for a clinical role but are currently non-clinical, you will have to apply through the external process and be interviewed, as you will require orientation to the clinical role. Internal nursing and midwifery staff applicants holding a permanent post within NHS Fife must be sponsored by their existing NHS Fife manager.
In the case of existing staff who are planning to leave permanent employment within the organisation, for example, someone approaching retirement who wishes to join the nurse bank, their line management will be provided by the Clinical Nurse Manager for the nurse bank and clinical and professional guidance can be sought from the Bank Clinical Nurse Manager.
External applicants
You can apply to join our nurse bank if you have registered or non-registered nursing or midwifery experience. External applicants to the Nursing and Midwifery Staff Bank will be subject to NHS Fife recruitment and selection process, which adheres to NHS Scotland Partnership Information Network (PIN) Guidelines and employment policies.

Nurse bank for students
Student nurses are welcome to join the Nurse Bank from Year 1. There are many reasons to join the nurse bank at this stage – this will help consolidate learning and give essential ‘hands-on’ experience. It will enhance any future job application to have nurse bank experience on your CV. It will help you to experience different areas of practice to see what kind of work you prefer, and lastly – it will boost your finances!
